Where To Go Sledding in Niagara This Winter (2024!)

One of my favourite winter activities as a kid was sledding. It’s a great excuse to get outdoors and experience what the Niagara Region has to offer!

Fortunately for those us living in Niagara, there are plenty of areas to embrace our Canadian winters with this fun, family-friendly activity – sledding! It’s time to reconnect with the great outdoors and create new memories amongst an upside-down year.

The Niagara Region transforms into a winter wonderland during the coldest season of the year, making it a wintry sports fans’ paradise! This is the perfect year to try new things, especially outdoors.

Sledding and Tobogganing Tips

  • Dress appropriately for the weather and in layers (think gloves, hats, and warm jackets, but avoid loose scarves or drawstrings!).
  • Check the hill for any hazards.
  • Avoid going out on icy days – it reduces friction and can cause loss of control, and less cushioning for those who fall off their sled!
  • Avoid going down head first, towards a road, fence, or body of water.
  • It is recommended that children wear helmets and are supervised at all times.
  • Use a proper sled or toboggan and check your equipment (I remember using makeshift ones when I was younger, and they didn’t provide any control – I flew off more times than I can count!).
  • During this pandemic – establish a route for going up and down the hill for flow of traffic, and maintain physical distance between tobogganers.

What to bring sledding

One thing I’ve personally been doing this year is getting my outdoor gear before it sells out! A lot of these winter sports are becoming widely popular as people are looking to spend more time outdoors in socially-distanced environments.

  • Toboggan or sled (this GT Racer brings back so many awesome memories as a kid!).
  • Youth Ski Helmet (recommended!)
  • Winter wear suitable for the weather like a hat, gloves, boots, jacket, etc.
  • Snacks and water!

I’ve never been sledding before, it looks (and sounds) like lots of fun. But, extreme newbie question here, how can you tell if it’s going to be an ‘icy’ day out there? Does that usually happen after it rains or after a warmer day?

That’s a great question! Usually we’ll just check the weather reports to know if it’s going to be a slick day, but both of your ideas are right! It happens when the snow melts and freezes. It kind of gets packed down and becomes crusty haha – and very little friction!

Sledding always reminds me of my childhood! I grew up on a small mountain in Austria and we did it every winter 🙂 It’s just so much fun!

So much fun!! Although I don’t think we will get any snow where I am, in the UK, so no sledding for me! Enjoy the fun that comes with the winter months!

I remember one Christmas we spent in the UK with family it actually snowed! Like, probably less than an inch, but we took cardboard boxes out to the church square haha. It was so fun 🙂 Thanks Bea!
