I forget that because my bag has a built-in whistle, that most people don't have that! I subbed the rip cord alarm for the whistle, but that's a great item to have too.

This is a great list. I stopped reading midway to add a tick removal tool to my shopping cart (it's that time of year in Nova Scotia as well). Did I miss a whistle? I'm wondering if a whistle could be used effectively to discourage a dog? Thankfully, I've never been in that position but a whistle and personal alarm is always attached to my day bag. I also paused reading to check my Columbia cap to see if it could accommodate a pony tail. I find a cap with a legionnaire flap gives me the protection I need, with the flap tucked inside when not in use. Sadly, no spot for a pony tail.
