5. North Cascades National Park, Washington

North Cascades National Park is among the least visited national parks in the US. While summer draws its share of visitors, you will see even fewer crowds in fall. 

With 93% of the park being designated wilderness, you can expect to see stunning fall colors, especially larches turning golden yellow. There is no entrance fee to enter the park.

Luckily the closest town, Gatlinburg, is a budget-friendly destination making your fall trip even more doable! While it’s certainly great for families with kids, there’s so many great things to do for adults in Gatlinburg like moonshine tastings, boutique shopping, and stellar dining.

In the fall, don’t miss the free hikes in Great Smoky Mountains National Park including Clingman’s Dome for 360-degree views, Laurel Falls for an accessible epic waterfall, and even the Appalachian Trail. While admission to the park is free, they have implemented a $5 daily parking fee.

In Gatlinburg, there are a number of great fall foliage viewpoints. Consider Anakeesta, for an all day activity as they have trails, gardens, and ziplines, or the SkyBridge if you want a short, yet rewarding experience.

8. Cloudcroft, New Mexico

Cloudcroft, NM, is such a hidden gem, especially in the fall! Not only is the destination budget friendly – but the mountain town also gives major cozy vibes.

Cloudcroft is a charming  little mountain town surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest. You can hike the beautiful trails surrounding the village to see fall foliage or simply rent a cabin and enjoy the atmosphere. The town centre is also super cute, it looks like it is out of a history book. 

It is an ideal destination for couples, solo travellers and adventurers. Families that love hiking and exploring will also love it, even though it is not necessarily a child-friendly destination. 

Things to do in Cloudcroft during the Fall

There are some really cool activities you can do in Cloudcroft in the fall.

• Hiking is the number one activity in Cloudcroft. Check the famous Osha Trail or the Rim Trail. 
• Visit Little J’s Ranch Sanctuary and spend time with rescued farm animals

10. Moab, Utah

While September and early October are peak seasons, Moab gets less crowded as October goes on. November sees even fewer crowds, making it budget friendly for everyone from solo travellers to families.

11. Port Angeles, Washington 

Port Angeles is a small mountain town located in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State.  It’s a great place to visit from the Seattle area for a weekend, or even from Canada, as there is a direct ferry from Victoria BC on Vancouver Island to Port Angeles. 

Although Port Angeles is only 20 minutes from the border of Olympic National Park, there are plenty of affordable accommodations and restaurants to use as a home base for exploring one of the USAs most diverse National Parks.

The fall is a great time to visit the Olympic Peninsula as crowds disappear, and there are many beautiful sunny days before the rainy season begins.  Although there are many hikes and adventures in the area, there are options for all kinds of travellers including couples, families, and those with mobility issues.  

Things to do in the fall in Port Angeles

• Whale Watching
• The Port Angeles Aquarium
• Hiking in the Hoh Rainforest or Sol Duc Valley, there are both challenging trails and very easy walks. 
• Taking the shuttle to Hurricane Ridge (this costs only 1$ and leaves directly from Port Angeles) and is a great option for folks of all abilities to get to a mountain summit and take in the views. 
• Paddling on Lake Crescent, Elwha River, or the Juan De Fuca Strait. 
• Exploring tide pools at Tongue Point at Salt Creek. Bring good shoes for this one as it’s rocky. 
• Check out one of the many festivals that happen around Port Angeles.  If you visit in October be sure to check out the Dungeness Crab Festival 
• Shopping the Boutiques and shops of Port Angeles, Moss Goods from the Woods is such a gem and the local bookstores have plenty of great reading material.  There are plenty of clothing shops, art galleries, and gift shops to check out too!

With the exception of whale watching, the best thing about all of these activities,  beautiful views and nature included, they are free! 

Where to Stay in Port Angeles

Book the family suite at Red Lion Inn for incredible ocean front views, and affordable large spacious renovated rooms. Bikes are included and there is an outdoor pool open until the weather turns.

While there are many yummy places to eat, check out Downriggers on the Water for fresh seafood and stunning ocean views.  Bonus this is right next to the ferry from Victoria BC.

12. Stanley, Idaho

Stanley, Idaho, which is known as the gateway to the rugged Sawtooth Mountains, is the perfect place for an autumn retreat, thanks to its incredible hikes, cozy cabins, and some of the best hot springs in the United States. While this small mountain town is rarely crowded, come fall, you’ll get to enjoy it in peace and quiet, given that the summertime visitors will have left.

The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont is a spectacular budget-friendly destination in the fall. The Northeast Kingdom is tucked away in the extreme northeast corner of Vermont.
